Several awards were announced last night at
Gallery on the Grand’s Meet the Artist reception for the Destinations
Juried Photography Show. Andrew Wright, Kitchener’s 2001
Artist-in-Residence, was the juror for the show. He awarded:
• Best in Show: “Women at the Masjid” by Terry Martin
“This photograph is a wonderfully mysterious moment of both exoticism and
quietude. Contrast between the starkly silhouetted figures and the
ornateness of the setting give the eyes much to move through. This
extremely topical image offers us a glimpse into a world full of dualities
and contradictions. Do we learn anything about this world? How different
is it from our own? In the end, that this image asks us to pose these
questions is the most important thing.”
• First Runner Up: “Destination Gloucester Road” by Aoife Nally
“Whimsy and fantasy combined with a keen sense of composition. This
artist's two photographs presented here are in the best tradition of "Babar"
and "Curious George".”
• Honorable Mentions: Red Barn by Ron Hare, New York Skyscraper by
David Burkett, The Spinning Wheel by Paul Brzustowski, Woman in Red Dress
by Arlene Turkington, Mosaic by Kevin Mercer, Becky’s Boots in Anne’s Land
& St. Martin’s Reflection by Monique Campbell, Drama in the Sky &
Spiritual Tapestry by Kevin Mercer, The Unknown Journey by Carla Beharry,
and #7 Train by Karl Kessler.
Guests to the gallery during the first 9 days of the
show were asked to vote for the People’s Choice Award. They agreed with
the juror on the beauty of Terry Martin’s work. There was a dead tie
between “Women at the Masjid” and “Carpathian Haunts”, both by Terry
Martin, so the People’s Choice award was given to the pair of Terry’s
photographs.
With the interest in photography received during the
show, Gallery on the Grand expects to make this an annual event.
Interested photographers should watch for a call for entrants in local
papers early in January, 2003 or Email
